Principle 1 of 8

Commitment

Show up for yourself again and again — small, steady choices that honor your healing.

Healing emotional wounds is rarely a single breakthrough. It is a relationship with yourself that deepens through repetition: returning to your inner work, keeping the promises you make to yourself, and choosing your wellbeing on ordinary days as well as difficult ones.

Commitment comes first among the eight principles because the others rest on it. Without it, honesty, courage and patience remain good intentions. With it, even small steps begin to add up, and the work can take root in daily life.

Commitment is not rigidity. Some days, showing up for yourself looks like rest. What matters is that you keep coming back.

Reflection

What is one small promise to yourself that you can keep this week?

These principles come from From Wound to Wisdom, where they form the foundation for deeper inner work. To see how they fit into the healing process, read about Alberto’s approach to healing emotional trauma.

A gentle note. This work is spiritual and educational in nature. It complements, and does not replace, the care of a licensed mental health professional or medical treatment. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please contact your local emergency services or a crisis line right away.
